President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Chung has over twenty-five years of hospital-focused, global medical device and pharmaceutical leadership, most recently serving in the role as Chief Commercial Officer for AcelRx Pharmaceuticals. Prior to AcelRx, Mr. Chung served as Chief Commercial Officer for Conceptus (Bayer), where he oversaw the strategic and day-to-day leadership for a 150-member global sales and marketing team. Prior to Conceptus, Mr. Chung served as President and CEO of Mitralis, an early-stage mitral valve repair company. He previously held roles of Vice President North America Sales and Marketing, and Global Vice President, Commercial Operations, for the Heart Valve Therapy business at Edwards Lifesciences. Mr. Chung began his career in the commercial organization at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Chung also served as a PATRIOT missile officer in the U.S. Army, with multiple distinctions, including Airborne, Desert Storm Veteran and Bronze Star Medal. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Lori Adels, PhD.
Vice President, Clinical, Regulatory and Quality
Dr. Adels has thirty years of experience in global medical device regulatory, clinical and quality leadership. Most recently, Dr. Adels was Executive Vice President, Regulatory and Clinical for the Experien Group, where she was responsible for developing regulatory and clinical strategies for medical device and pharmaceutical clients. Prior to Experien Group, Dr. Adels was Vice President, Regulatory/Clinical Affairs, Heart Valve Therapy at Edwards Lifesciences. In addition, she has acted as an independent regulatory consultant for ten years, working for a number of successful medical device companies including Smart Therapeutics, APTUS, AtriCure and Sadra Medical. Dr. Adels has also held various positions in Regulatory, Clinical and Quality at Guidant Corporation, EndoVascular Technologies, Pfizer/Shiley and Baxter Healthcare. Dr. Adels’ educational background includes degrees in behavioral biology and a PhD in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology from the University of California, Irvine.
Ron M. Nelson
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Nelson has held various full-time positions in finance with several early-stage medical device startups in the last 30+ years. Mr. Nelson started his career with Touche Ross & Co., an international public accounting firm. Most recently, he was Chief Financial Officer of CHF Solutions, a medical device company prior to their acquisition. Mr. Nelson has extensive experience in finance leadership positions with several global start-up ventures. Mr. Nelson’s educational background includes CPA certification and a Bachelors degree in Business from Gustavus Adolphus College.
Vice President Commercial Sales Europe
Mr. Jonkers is a 20 year veteran of the medical device and healthcare industry. Most recently, Jonkers was with Medtronic, Inc., leading a large commercial organization responsible for catheter-based therapies and surgical heart valves across the EMEA region. Prior to Medtronic, he was with CoreValve, Inc., serving in a clinical and sales leadership capacity and a key member of the team that directed the successful integration of CoreValve into the Medtronic organization upon acquisition. Mr. Jonkers’ educational background includes healthcare and business degrees from the Open University Netherlands.
Bruce Van Deman
Vice President Clinical/Strategic Marketing
Mr. Van Deman has over 25 years of experience in the medical product and healthcare industry. Prior to joining NeoChord, Mr. Van Deman held key functional leadership positions at Edwards Lifesciences including two Senior Director roles in both global marketing and clinical affairs, providing leadership in the company’s structural heart valve therapy business. Mr. Van Deman has held a variety of pivotal roles in global organizations including Philips Healthcare, Picker International, and Gojo Healthcare. His responsibilities in these roles included program strategy, product development, product management, medical education, and scientific communications. Mr. Van Deman received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Purdue University and a master’s degree in business from The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
Vice President Research and Development
Mr. Edmiston has over 15 years of interventional medical device leadership experience. His background includes engineering project management, state-of-the-art manufacturing process development, and medical device design with patents in embolic protection, stent delivery and occlusion devices. He has extensive experience in implementing R&D capabilities in a startup environment, managing intellectual property, and developing technical and design dossiers through clinical trials. Prior to joining NeoChord, Mr. Edmiston was Vice President of Research and Development at Coherex Medical, leading teams from concept development through CE Mark and IDE approval. Prior to Coherex Medical, Mr. Edmiston held leadership roles at Rubicon Medical, directing technical development through clinical trials, CE market clearance and company acquisition. He also held technical roles at Fairchild Semiconductor and Spectra-Physics Laserplane. Mr. Edmiston holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University.
Ranny Chitwood, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer (consultant)
Dr. Chitwood is an internationally known cardiac surgeon, who pioneered robotic and minimally invasive mitral valve surgery. He has 35 years of experience in practicing high volume cardiac surgery, specializing in mitral valve repair. He performed the first complete robotic mitral repair in the United States and led the clinical trials eventuating in FDA approval of the daVinci Surgical System for mitral valve surgery. He has worked with various companies developing innovative technology and participating in clinical trials. These include Intuitive Surgical, Atricure, Scanlan International, Abbott and Edwards Life Sciences. He is a past President of the Society for Thoracic Surgeons, the Heart Valve Society, and the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Chitwood graduated from Hampden Sydney College (BS) and the University of Virginia (MD). He completed a ten-year residency program in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University. Thereafter, he established the cardiac surgery program at East Carolina University, rising to Chairman of the Department of Surgery and later to become the Founder of the East Carolina Heart institute.
